Submitting to Tell Magazine

 

Thank you for your interest in submitting your work to Tell Magazine. To facilitate the review process, please ensure that your submission adheres to the following guidelines.

Type of Submissions:

  1. Critical Essay: All manuscripts should develop an argument supported by reputable academic sources and/or original research and include the following sections as a minimum: Title, Main Body, and References. Sections of the manuscript should appear in the following order: Title, Main Body, Notes, References, Tables & Figures, and Appendices (if applicable). Essays should have between 800 and 1500 words.
  2. Poetry: We publish a wide range of feminist and critical poetry. We look for eclectic swatches of style, tone, subject, and form and especially encourage authors to reflect on the complexities of gender and sexuality of marginalized populations. You can publish up to 3 poems of any length in one submission as long as all meet the Call for Submissions theme. 
  3. Memoir: In the feminist spirit of “the personal is political,” we encourage authors to submit their memoirs reflecting factual and emotional truths that can resonate with broader audiences. We are particularly interested in memoirs using an intersectional lens to describe life experiences and those engaging with contemporary social issues related to gender and sexuality. Memoirs should have a Title, Main Body, and Notes (if applicable) and be between 800 and 1500 words.
  4. Video: Videos responding to the aims and scope of Tell Magazine include educational material about feminist theory, short documentaries, and visual narratives. They must be created using a non-destructive editing program to facilitate edits by authors based on reviewer comments. Submissions can be low-quality rendered files or a private link to a hosting platform such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Box, but following acceptance, they will be posted in HD-quality in the blog. All video submissions should include a Title, full transcript, and a brief description of the piece (no longer than 150 words). It should not exceed 5 minutes. 
  5. Podcast: We publish audio recordings/podcasts about feminist activism, theory, and discussions on contemporary issues from a decolonial, intersectional, and/or feminist perspective. Audio submissions must be created using a non-destructive editing program to facilitate edits by authors based on reviewer comments and should be saved in MP3, MP4, WAV, or WMA file type. All podcasts should include a Title, full transcript, and a brief description of the piece (no longer than 150 words). It should not exceed 5 minutes. 
  6. Art piece: Tell Magazine accepts original art creations (painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, etc.) that resonate with the aims and scope of the publication. The art submission must be in a Word document and include a brief artist statement (no longer than 250 words) and a maximum of 10 illustrations of their work (with captions for each piece, if applicable). Please note that images must be received in a Microsoft Word file with the artist statement, not as individual JPEG or TIFF files.
  7. Interview: We publish audio or written interviews performed with “key informants” whose knowledge and life experiences illuminate contemporary social issues related to gender and sexuality. Audio recordings must include a full transcript of the interview. All submissions should include a Title, a presentation of the interview (no longer than 100 words), a brief description of the interviewee(s) (no longer than 150 words), and the main body of the transcript. Interviews should not exceed 5 minutes. 
  8. Zine: We publish single-authored or collaborative digital/digitized zines, including art and photograph zines, literary zines, comics, social and political zines, and scholarly zines. Publications of this type should be between 10 and 18 pages, including the front cover and back cover. The content of the zine should reflect Tell Magazine's aims and scope. Authors submitting zines that feature primarily visual elements should include a brief rationale/description (no longer than 150 words) for the zine.

 

Document Type & Style

Please see the specific requirements above according to the type of submission. All text documents should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document and should be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double-spaced. Only text in tables and figures may be single-spaced. 

Manuscripts that include academic references should follow the Chicago Manual of Style (Autor-date 17th edition). Please remove all automatic referencing features from the document and ensure that all in-text citations are listed in the Reference section of the document. 

 

Anonymized Peer Review Process

Submissions will be sent out anonymously for editorial and peer review evaluation. Please do not include author names, affiliations, or any other identifying information about the authors in your submission document. You will provide this information separately in the submission form. Regardless of the decision of your submission, you will hear back from an editor and/or receive comments from a peer reviewer.

 

Permissions

The author is responsible for obtaining permission for any quoted or reprinted material that requires permission and paying all associated fees. Authors submitting manuscripts or media pieces to the blog should not simultaneously submit them to another journal or online publication, nor should they have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content.

 

English Language Editing Policy

We encourage submissions from a diverse range of authors from all countries and backgrounds currently enrolled at the University of Iowa. All submissions should be in English, but the authors whose English is not their first language can request additional assistance with English language editing, translation, or manuscript formatting to fit the magazine’s specifications. Open Access Publication

There are no fees to submit or publish in this online magazine. On acceptance of your article or media piece, you accept that Tell Magazine retains the work's copyright without restrictions, allowing the editorial team to publish and distribute your piece in the online blog, social media, and other communications, always ensuring that your original work is correctly cited.

Tell Magazine encourages authors to share accepted manuscripts and media pieces by posting them in personal blogs, institutional repositories, scientific/social media, and on their personal social media, as long as the full citation to the magazine website version is included. 

 

Corrections and Retractions Policy

Tell Magazine fully endorses the norms regarding scientific misconduct (Federal Research Misconduct Policy) and is committed to publishing corrections when problems are detected in published information that affects the publication record and/or its scientific accuracy. 

Authors, reviewers, and editors are encouraged to report any suspected research ethics, post-submission corrections, or publication malpractice issues using the magazine’s email or by directly writing to the editors-in-chief. The final decision to publish corrections, expressions of concern, or retracting published articles will be made by the Editor-in-Chief.
